Viking workshop

On Thursday 11th April Y5 took part in a Viking workshop as part of their history topic. The children re-enacted an Anglo-Saxon and Viking battle, learning about the weapons that were used and battle formations and tactics from both sides, including the Viking shield wall. The children then used their archaeological skills to dig up artefacts, including coins, armour and everyday items from different periods throughout history. In the afternoon, the children competed against each other in two Viking board games (9 Men’s Morris and Tafl/Hnefatafl). The day concluded with the children taking part in a ‘Viking Thing’, in which they had to decide and vote on trivial and serious matters as a community, similar to a parliament or court. It was a brilliant day, the children had a fantastic time and they will now start their topic really well informed about the Vikings . Thankyou to the PTA for their donation to Y5 which enabled the day to go ahead.
