In order to secure a real understanding of numeracy the emphasis is very much on practical activities first.
Children are taught of variety of methods and techniques to help them in all numeracy concepts. At all stages they are later encouraged to explain their thinking to others and to work confidently in pairs or in a group.
We have also launched Singapore Maths to help support and develop mathematical learning and concepts.
The teaching at Carleton Endowed CE Primary School follows a problem-solving approach through a scheme that we him invented called Big Sheet Maths. It's emphasis on the more efficient 'linear' methods of calculation for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Children are taught to understand why they are doing things.
As in Literacy, Years 3, 4 and 5 are assessed in using new optional SATs papers in the summer term to determine each pupils attainment in relation to national standards. This helps greatly towards pinpointing areas of strength as well as development in individual pupils.
Details of progress are given to parents each term and in the annual summer report.
